PROTIQ was honoured at the International Zinc Die Casting Competition
PROTIQ received very special recognition at this year's Zinc Die Casting Conference: the five-member jury of the International Zinc Diecasting Competition decided to honour the process for the additive processing of zinc developed by PROTIQ.
Prof. Annalisa Pola, jury member and professor at the University of Brescia, presented Dr Johannes Lohn (PROTIQ) with the special recognition for "Intelligent Manufacturing" during the award ceremony at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.
"[The process developed by PROTIQ] supports the zinc die casting industry in growing the business, especially in areas where the use of zinc die cast parts is questioned. End users can easily be convinced about the right selection of engineering material for their parts", emphasised the jury.
The international competition was held in conjunction with the European Zinc Die Casting Conference in Koblenz. Die casters from all over the world were invited to submit zinc die casting components that stand out for their design, quality, ingenuity, cost savings or innovation. The aim was to present new possibilities and potentials to an experienced audience of experts.
Additive manufacturing with Zamak 5
PROTIQ is the first 3D printing service provider worldwide to succeed in developing a process for additive processing of the zinc alloy Zamak 5. With this innovative production method, the high time and cost expenditures for small quantities that are typical for zinc die casting can be avoided. Prototypes and small series are produced at a comparatively low component price. Changes can be made quickly in the CAD model and the adapted component can be manufactured directly.
In addition, 3D printing also opens up completely new possibilities for the design itself: The gyroid submitted as a sample part to the competition cannot be produced conventionally with its undercuts. It is only through additive manufacturing that such shapes or, for example, internal geometries can be realised in one production step.
